This is something most professional musicians understand well and is important for doing well when taking the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) exams. True musicianship can only come from a deep understanding of the three pillars of music skills: performance, theory, and ear training. But your child is never going to master this skill without specific training, which is something that some private instructors can help you with.īut if they do not know why aural music training is essential? Read on… Compare that to the start when you knew nothing, then every question was a relevant test. Many parents and music students taking private lessons just assume that aural music skill (ear training in music) just comes the more you practice, and that may be true to a certain degree. In 10 questions, you have a 10% chance of never even getting tested on the new interval. Fast forward a few more tests and now it’s asking you about 5 intervals and you already know 4 of them. It’s going to ask a mix of questions, some of which include material you’ve already mastered, so it’s not even testing the newest material.
Then you master Unison vs Major Third, now you’re on to the next test which add Perfect Fifth. Simple example: you start the first test knowing nothing. In fact, the tests get probabilistically easier as you go, not harder. You only need to get 9 of 10 right to complete a goal, and it’s pretty easy to get there if you get lucky, even without having mastered the intervals being tested. My only complaint is that the criteria for graduating a goal is too easy. I would rather pay $5 then be nagged as much as this app nags.Īside from that, it’s good at what it does. I’m forced to conclude that its harvesting email addresses to sell.
Why, I really must wonder, does it care who I invite. Its constantly asking me to login, and after I finally capitulated and made an account I had no interest in, now its spamming me to invite my friends. This app has a lot of great exercises, but it’s very annoying.
I only gripe because it's fantastic and needs a few little touches to be perfect. This is a fantastic app that you could definitely justify charging for I'd gladly fork over money for this. Maybe there's an option to change this if not please add one, here Tenuto has you beat. It's obviously good to know your way around a keyboard but if I'm training my ears I want my brain power to focus only on that.Īnother is that the bass notes are too loud in the chord identification. Another option should be entering the notes directly eg. up p4 down m3 as well as a guitar fretboard if the touch screen doesn't make it too difficult. Optimally there would be options for intervalic input eg. The melodic dictation requires you to input the notes on a keyboard which requires a proficiency not all musicians have myself included. Happens frequently to me and it's an annoying glitch. Couple things for the devs: the app sometimes plays a tone for way longer than intended. Love the melodic dictation it's why I wanted more than Tenuto which only has intervals. Great app, a necessary part of the ear training regimen for anyone looking to improve.
